The Making of Sail Flyer Sculpture
Sail Flyer is a fantasy project, that I built using straight flat metal fabrication, repoussé, resin work and casting.
The idea is to make a flying sail ship with painted sails and resin wings.
I make two half domed circles that will form the main body.
These are split by a 2 mm copper plate.
I pierce out the copper plate and then join the 'body' to it with placer screws.
Then I make the tail boom.
Making the egg shaped propulsion unit.
Now the top cover where the living quarters will be added.
Making the mast for the sails.
As with the old viking ships this one has a stylistic bird as a figure head.
I made the sails out of formed aluminium and the frames for the wings I pierced out of 1 mm brass sheet.
The central cabin that houses the crew and captain being built.
I etch the egg shaped rear stabilizing unit.
I inlaid semi transparent resin into the wings to give them a gossamer look.
Then I painted the sails with some of the islands that the sail flier has visited before.
